Profile of Judith Ogilvie

Judith Hermanson Ogilvie, Chapter Secretary and Chair of the AUP Board of Trustees

AUPDC is very proud that Judith Hermanson Ogilvie, one of our founding members, was appointed in May to Chair of AUP's Board of Trustees.

Judith grew up abroad with a father in the Foreign Service. Her childhood experiences living in places like Kabul fostered a concern for individuals and populations who had been left behind by development.

She attended AUP from 1963 to 1965 when it was still ACP and a two-year institution because she wanted an American style education without losing the international environment she had come to appreciate. She completed her undergraduate studies at Smith, earned a Ph.D. in American Studies, and spent five years with the Peace Corps in the Philippines and Uganda. Judith passed up an opportunity to work at the UN because she "felt that it was intellectually and empirically necessary to understand the dynamics and issues at home." She decided to join Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), which was founded in 1965 to fight poverty in America.

Judith went on to co-found and manage a privately held consulting and policy research company that was sold to IBM in 1982. Since 1987 she has been at CHF (Cooperative Housing Foundation) International, one of the country's largest NGO's with programs in all regions of the world, where she has risen to the position of Senior Vice President responsible for overall operations and program execution.

Judith demonstrates a rare devotion to AUP, and has served on its Board of Trustees since 1999, chairing its Committee on Academic and Student Affairs. She has helped arrange several internships for AUP students at CHF. Several years ago, she and several other alumni resolved to take advantage of the presence of several hundred members of the AUP community (alumni, former students, and parents) who live in the greater Washington, DC area. Working with Peggy Montgomery ('75), Darryl Crompton ('69), and Richard Nagel ('81), Judith helped establish our DC chapter.

If you haven't yet met Judith, please consider coming to one of our regular get-togethers at a local French restaurant or to a special event like our annual Bastille Day picnic.

Bastille Day Picnic

Keeping Up with France in the DC Area
Wavy French Flag The French Embassy's Maison Française offers a wonderful range of music, film, and other activities. The website also highlights a "Holiday Party in Paris," which will be held at Maison Française (4101 Reservoir Road NW in Washington, DC) on December 5. Maison Française is in the process of becoming "House of France DC" (www.HouseofFranceDC.org), but their website indicates that nothing but the name will change. Apparently, there are not sufficient AUP alumni and other French speakers in the area to maintain the old name. For details about other upcoming events, visit www.la-maison-francaise.org.

Alliance Française at 2142 Wyoming Ave, NW, offers films, music, wine tastings, gallery tours, and other gatherings in addition to language courses at all levels. For details about upcoming events or to subscribe to their newsletter, visit www.francedc.org.
