The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy

From the VMFA website: "The elaborate tombs of the dukes of Burgundy are among the masterpieces of late medieval sculpture in Europe... Thirty-seven alabaster mourners, considered embodiments of late medieval devotion and piety. They convey powerful emotion, some lost in thought or giving vent to their grief, and others consoling their neighbors. Mourning, they remind us, is a collective experience, common to all people and all moments in history."
Picasso’s Drawings, 1890-1921: Reinventing Tradition

From the NGA website: "Through some 55 works, the exhibition presents the dazzling development of Picasso's drawings over a 30-year period—from the precocious academic exercises of his youth in the 1890s to the virtuoso works of the early 1920s, including the radical innovations of cubism and collage."

Snapshot: Painters and Photography, Bonnard to Vuillard

From the PC website: "The invention of the Kodak handheld camera in 1888 energized the working methods and creative vision of many post-impressionists. Several of the leading painters and printmakers of the day used photography to record their public spheres and private lives, producing surprising, inventive results. Combining over 200 photographs with approximately 70 paintings, prints, and drawings from renowned international collections."
Royalists to Romantics: Women Artists from the Louvre, Versailles, and other French National Collections

From the NMWA website: "Featuring 77 paintings, prints, and sculptures from 1750 to 1850 – a tumultuous revolutionary era – Royalists to Romantics celebrates these rare works, many of which have never been seen outside of France."
The 2012 Francophonie Cultural Festival

Enjoy this cultural tour of the French-speaking world, with a full month of exciting concerts, lectures, film screenings, plays and other special events. "Celebrating vibrant artistry from all points of the compass, the Francophonie Cultural Festival is a voyage of exploration, discovery and cultural exchange among French-speaking nations." French Film Festival (20th anniversary)
March 26–April 21
Byrd Theatre, Richmond, VA
From France magazine: "Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012, the festival kicks off with a symposium titled French Cinema: Art, Science, and Technology at Work for Humanity. The movie lineup includes more than 25 recent features and shorts, all presented by their directors and/or leading cast members."
